Five-year relative survival proportions for people diagnosed with cancer.
Indicator Summary
The probability of surviving five years in people with cancer is divided by the probability of surviving five years in the general population (matched on age, sex and calendar year).

- remoteness (Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remoteness Structure)
- SEIFA Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD) quintiles
Disaggregation by state and territory are not able to be provided this reporting cycle. Substantial development work is required in conjunction with state and territories and their cancer registries. It would require calculation against jurisdictional life tables and approval from cancer registries.

The probability of surviving five years in people with cancer is divided by the probability of surviving five years in the general population (matched on age, sex and calendar year).
Analysis will be undertaken using the ‘period’ method of calculation. See Cancer survival and prevalence in Australia: cancers diagnosed from 1982 to 2004 (2008 Cancer Series no. 42. Cat. no. CAN 38).
Analyses by state and territory, remoteness and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD) are based on usual residence of person at diagnosis.
