Definition
The scope of the WA Abortion Notification System (WA ANS) is defined by Form 1 of the Regulations for the WA Health Act 1911. The WA ANS holds a digital copy of information provided on Form 1 by Medical Practitioners to the Executive Director, Public Health within 14 days of performing a procedure that is intended to terminate a woman's pregnancy or a fetus of a multiple pregnancy. Details of events for women having miscarriages (spontaneous abortions) or procedures to extract fetuses that have died in utero are not included in this collection.

WA ANS name: Record_number. For the WA ANS, the number is manually created in sequence at the Department of Health. The number is unique for each calendar year and is assigned to each Form in the order of receipt. The sequence number is reset to 1 for the first abortion notification form received where the abortion was performed in the new year. |

Guide for use:
This DSS specifies the data elements required to be reported by Medical Practitioners by the WA Health Act 1911, and its Regulations. It also describes any relationships with other DSS or Data Elements.
The WA Health Act 1911 prohibits identifying information being reported on Form 1 for women having induced abortions. Some demographic data are collected for statistical analysis like pregnancy gestation and maternal age, postcode of residence and indigenous status.
