- Rates are directly age-standardised to the Australian population as at 30 June 2001.
Excludes pregnant women and people with an unknown Body Mass Index (BMI).
Scope of collections limited to persons usually resident in private dwellings. Persons usually resident in non-private dwellings such as hotels, motels, hospitals, nursing homes and short-stay caravan parks were not included in the surveys.
Estimates for non-Indigenous people estimates exclude those living in very remote areas of Australia.
BMI is calculated as weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of height (in metres).
For adults, obesity is defined as a BMI of greater than or equal to 30.
For children, obesity is defined as BMI (appropriate for age and sex) that is likely to be 30 or more at age 18 years, based on centile curves.
BMI derived from measured height and weight is preferable to that derived from self-reported height and weight.
